Jerome Tilley Gyado (1915-2006)

Chief Jerome Tilley Gyado, a great entrepreneur, philanthropist and devoted father, was born on 22 June 1915 in Ihugh, in what is now Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State. His journey began amid hardship and sacrifice, without the formal education and training that was the norm for most people of his time.

As a young man, he joined the British Army and served during World War II. He returned from the battlefield to build a career that would carry him from humble beginnings to an international business empire.

On returning to Nigeria in the late 1940s, he moved to Zaria, in present-day Kaduna State. There he became a pioneer supplier of tobacco, which he bought in Benue, transported to Zaria and sold. Tobacco was then one of the major export commodities of Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

His entrepreneurial vision grew to cover real estate, cement production, breweries and infrastructure, ventures that helped shape the economic landscape of Northern Nigeria.

Chief Gyado founded:

  1. Tilley Gyado College, in Ihugh (Vandeikya LGA) and North Bank, Makurdi
  2. Tilley Gyado Hospital, Gboko
  3. Tilley Gyado White House Hotels, in Gboko, Makurdi, Jos and Kaduna
  4. Tilley Gyado Construction Company
  5. Tilley Gyado Transport

His legacy goes beyond business. As a philanthropist, he invested heavily in the Gyado Foundation, which serves communities through scholarships for Benue students, support for local market women, and the promotion of harmony among his people. His giving reflected a belief in sharing wealth, grounded in principle, humility and resilience.
