List of Ghana MPs (Members of Parliament) with name, constituency, party
Ghana parliament building

Ghana’s Members of Parliament

Ghana’s Members of Parliament (MPs) are the elected representatives of the country’s 276 constituencies in the unicameral Parliament of Ghana. They are responsible for making laws, scrutinizing government policies and expenditure, representing the interests of their constituents, and approving national budgets and key appointments.

Each constituency elects one Member of Parliament through a first-past-the-post electoral system. Parliamentary elections are held every four years alongside the presidential election.

Composition of Parliament

The current Parliament consists of 276 Members of Parliament, each representing a single constituency across Ghana’s sixteen regions. MPs come from different political parties, with the majority belonging to the two main political parties:

  • National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • New Patriotic Party (NPP)

In addition to these two major parties, a small number of constituencies are represented by Independent Members of Parliament.

Following the most recent parliamentary elections, the NDC holds the majority of seats, while the NPP forms the main opposition. A few constituencies are represented by independent legislators.

Roles and Responsibilities of MPs

Members of Parliament perform several constitutional and legislative functions, including:

  • Making, amending and repealing laws.
  • Debating national issues and government policies.
  • Approving the national budget and taxation measures.
  • Providing oversight of ministries, departments and state agencies.
  • Vetting and approving key public appointments.
  • Representing the needs and concerns of constituents.
  • Facilitating development projects and advocating for their constituencies.

MPs also participate in parliamentary committees, where detailed examination of bills, public expenditure, petitions and government activities takes place.

Representation Across Ghana

Every constituency, regardless of its population size or location, elects one MP. These constituencies are distributed across all sixteen regions, ensuring representation from urban centres, rural communities and remote districts.

The constituencies include major metropolitan areas such as Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Sekondi-Takoradi, as well as rural constituencies throughout the country.

Political Parties in Parliament

The majority of MPs belong to one of Ghana’s two dominant political parties.

National Democratic Congress (NDC)

The NDC is the largest party in the current Parliament, with MPs representing constituencies across every region of Ghana.

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The NPP forms the principal opposition in Parliament and also has representatives from constituencies throughout the country.

Independent Members

A small number of constituencies elected Independent candidates, demonstrating that Ghana’s electoral system also allows candidates outside the major political parties to secure parliamentary seats.

List of Ghana’s Members of Parliament

A comprehensive alphabetical list of Ghana’s Members of Parliament includes each MP’s:

  • Name
  • Constituency
  • Political party

The list covers all 276 Members of Parliament, beginning with Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu (Ayawaso Central, NDC) and ending with Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah (Salaga South, NDC). It includes representatives from every constituency in Ghana, identifying whether they belong to the NDC, NPP or are Independent.

Importance of Parliament

Parliament is one of Ghana’s principal democratic institutions. Through debates, legislation and oversight, Members of Parliament influence national development, governance and public accountability. They serve as the direct link between citizens and the central government, ensuring that local concerns are reflected in national decision-making.

As elected representatives, MPs play a vital role in shaping Ghana’s political, economic and social development while safeguarding democratic governance through legislative oversight and representation.
