Tiv national cloth

Anger is Tiv people’s national clothe. It’s a black and white striped attire.

Although Tiv nation has other national, cultural attires, anger is the most prestigious.

Anger

Tiv people arrived at their permanent locations in Nigeria and Cameroon from southern and central Africa centuries ago they realised that the zebra they used to hunt for meat and skin was not native to the new areas.

When they acquired the skill of the loom, they decided to honour their heritage by weaving a cloth with black-and-white stripes, reminiscent of the zebra skin; this would then be made the preferred attire.

Initially, it was a simple cloth to be draped around the torso. Nowadays, it is made into elaborate robes, such as those worn by the traditional rulers and elders – from the Tor Tiv downwards.

The black colour means Tiv have their roots as black people from Africa. The white colour signifies peace and love. This way, the two colours represent a zebra character in wild nature. The zebra is one of the most peaceful and mild creatures. It does not harm people.
