The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has commenced the implementation of the new basic 9 national education policy.

This Executive Chairman, SUBEB, Dr Grace Adagba, disclosed this on Wednesday during a radio programme on Radio Benue titled “On the Line” and monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The new education policy learners/pupils would receive their First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) after completing basic 9, instead of basic 6.

Adagba said the state has commended the full implementation of the new national education policy, which would see learners now receive FSLC upon completion of basic 9, rather than basic 6.

She said SUBEB under her watch was focused on delivering quality education through the provision of modern infrastructure and instructional materials.

She said the enrolment drive campaign ongoing in the state was to ensure that all school-age children were enrolled into schools in line with the state’s policy on free and compulsory basic education.

The SUBEB chairman, who highlighted the importance of Early Childhood Care, Development, and Education (ECCDE) centres located in public primary schools across the state also urged parents to enrol their children as young as two years old.

She said the centers also serve as nursery schools that provided a solid educational foundation for the young learners.

During the programme, Adagba also discussed SUBEB’s partnerships with international organizations such as UNICEF, which supports the board by providing training and instructional materials for ECCDE centres.

Adagba said the partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), was aimed at rehabilitating street children and equipping them with life-improving skills for the desired result.

While assuring the public of the quality of teaching staff in public schools in the state, Adagba assured listeners that all public-school teachers in the state hold at least an NCE certificate, qualifying them to deliver high-quality teaching at the basic level.
