Goodbye to Elizabeth Setshedi, one of Africa’s oldest women, who passed away on 8 May 2025 at the age of 121. Born on 16 July 1903 in De Bosveld, Elizabeth’s life spanned three centuries of profound change, resilience, and love. Her final days were spent in Slaagboom Village, where she had become a local icon and the most senior citizen of Moretele Local Municipality, North West.
According to Moretele Municipality spokesman Mothupi Malebye, Elizabeth died at Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, leaving behind a legacy that few can match.
Her daughter, Martha Zitha (84), spoke with deep sorrow, describing her mother as “our pillar of strength.” Elizabeth was more than a centenarian—she was a living library of history, a grandmother to nations, and a woman who radiated warmth and wisdom.
Elizabeth’s remarkable life included:
- 12 children (4 still living)
- 58 grandchildren
- 103 great-grandchildren
- 43 great-great-grandchildren
Her favorite food was ispatlo, a beloved South African street dish, which she enjoyed well into her later years.
Funeral Details: Elizabeth Setshedi will be laid to rest at Slagboom Cemetery on Saturday, 17 May 2025. The event will be attended by local officials and community leaders, as well as her large extended family and neighbors who cherished her.

She will be remembered not just for her longevity, but for her humility, fierce love for family, and her inspiring life journey. The nation mourns a true matriarch.
