ABRAHAM ORKURGA MALU: A DISTINGUISHED PHYSICIAN, ACADEMIC, MEDICAL LEADER AND MENTOR

A Life Dedicated to Medical Excellence, Professional Leadership, Mentorship and Service to Humanity

Professor Abraham Orkurga Malu (OON) is a distinguished Nigerian physician, renowned academic, gastroenterologist and medical administrator whose professional journey reflects an extraordinary commitment to excellence, service and the advancement of medical education in Nigeria.

Born in May 1950, Professor Malu hails from Audu Village, Tombo Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. Over the decades, he has distinguished himself through his contributions to medical practice, postgraduate medical training, academic leadership, healthcare development and the fight against viral hepatitis in Nigeria.

His remarkable career is characterised not only by professional accomplishments but also by a deep commitment to raising future generations of medical professionals and strengthening healthcare institutions.

Early Life and Educational Background

Professor Malu’s educational journey began in 1959 when he enrolled in local government primary schools in Ugba and Sankera, Benue State. He completed his primary education in 1965, laying the foundation for what would become an exceptional academic and professional career.

In 1966, he gained admission into Government College, Keffi, where he began his secondary education just ten days before Nigeria’s first military coup. Despite the political and social uncertainties of the period, he remained focused on his studies and graduated in 1970 with Division One, an outstanding academic distinction.

He subsequently completed his Higher School Certificate (HSC) programme at Government College, Keffi, between 1971 and 1972.

In 1973, his outstanding academic performance earned him admission offers to study Medicine at three prestigious Nigerian universities: the University of Lagos, the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also received an offer to study Education at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University.

After considering these opportunities, he chose to pursue his passion for medicine at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied from 1973 to 1978 and obtained his medical degree.

Medical Career and Advanced Professional Training

Following his graduation, Professor Malu completed his housemanship at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. He subsequently proceeded to the area now known as Zamfara State for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

In 1980, he returned to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital to commence postgraduate residency training, marking the beginning of his specialisation in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

As part of his professional development, he undertook a clinical attachment at the Gastroenterology Unit of Bristol Royal Infirmary, United Kingdom, between 1983 and 1984.

His commitment to professional excellence was further demonstrated in May 1985 when he obtained the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. In 2002, he also became a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians.

His international professional exposure continued between 1992 and 1993 when he served as a Commonwealth Fellow in Medicine and Gastroenterology at St. James’ University Hospital, Leeds, United Kingdom.

These experiences significantly enriched his clinical expertise and strengthened his capacity to contribute to specialist medical practice and training in Nigeria.

Academic Excellence and Leadership in Medical Education

Professor Malu has built an impressive academic career, serving in various teaching, research and administrative capacities at some of Nigeria’s leading medical institutions.

His academic appointments and contributions span Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the University of Jos; and the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

At the University of Jos, he occupied several important leadership positions, including Head of Department, Dean and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Through these responsibilities, he contributed to institutional administration, academic development and the advancement of medical education.

In recognition of his scholarly contributions and professional achievements, he was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1998.

His research output is equally remarkable, with more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals, reflecting his dedication to medical research, knowledge development and the dissemination of scientific information.

Building Institutions and Transforming Healthcare in Benue State

One of the most significant chapters in Professor Malu’s career was his appointment as the Foundation Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, a position he held from 2008 to 2017.

His leadership played a crucial role in establishing and developing the institution into a functional teaching hospital.

Under his stewardship, the hospital became the first functional state-owned teaching hospital in northern Nigeria, according to the biographical account of his achievements.

This milestone was particularly significant for medical education in Benue State and beyond. The institution helped facilitate the graduation of medical students whose academic progression had experienced prolonged delays and provided opportunities for specialist training across several medical disciplines.

His contribution to the development of the hospital represents a lasting institutional legacy, demonstrating his ability to translate professional knowledge and administrative experience into meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery and medical education.

A Champion of Hepatitis Awareness and Specialist Training in Nigeria

Beyond his clinical and academic responsibilities, Professor Malu has made outstanding contributions to gastroenterology and hepatology, particularly in the area of viral hepatitis.

Having witnessed the suffering and loss of lives associated with the poor management of hepatitis at lower levels of healthcare delivery, he became deeply committed to improving public awareness, strengthening specialist training and promoting better standards of treatment.

He recognised that many lives could be saved through early diagnosis, proper management, effective referral systems and increased public understanding of hepatitis.

His involvement in professional medical organisations has provided an important platform for advancing these objectives.

He served as President of the Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in Nigeria (ASLIN), the predecessor of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN).

He also chaired the SOGHIN committee responsible for developing and reviewing guidelines for the management of hepatitis in Nigeria.

Furthermore, Professor Malu made significant contributions to the development of Nigeria’s National Strategic Plan on Viral Hepatitis. More recently, he chaired the national committee reviewing guidelines for hepatitis management in the country.

These contributions reflect his commitment to ensuring that scientific knowledge, professional standards and evidence-based medical practices translate into better healthcare outcomes for Nigerians.

Professional Memberships and National Recognition

Throughout his career, Professor Malu has maintained active involvement in several professional medical associations, contributing to the growth and development of the medical profession.

His professional affiliations include:

  • Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
  • Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN).
  • Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN).
  • British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).
  • National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine, education and national development, he was honoured by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the prestigious national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

This national recognition further underscores his distinguished service and contributions to society.

A Philosophy of Mentorship: Preparing Others to Take Over

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of Professor Malu’s professional philosophy is his commitment to mentorship and succession planning.

His guiding ambition has consistently been to make himself redundant by training others to take his place in every professional role he undertakes.

This philosophy reflects a rare understanding of leadership: that true success is not measured merely by personal achievements or positions held, but by the capacity to develop others who can sustain and improve upon one’s contributions.

Through years of teaching, clinical supervision, postgraduate training and mentorship, he has helped shape generations of medical professionals.

Today, many of his former students serve in major hospitals and healthcare institutions across Nigeria, occupying important positions in clinical practice, research, medical education and healthcare administration.

His legacy therefore extends far beyond his personal achievements. It lives on through the countless doctors and specialists whose professional journeys have been influenced by his teaching, guidance and example.

Family Life and Personal Commitments

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Malu is a devoted family man.

He is married to Professor Keziah Malu, an accomplished ophthalmologist. Together, they are blessed with five children and eleven grandchildren.

Their shared commitment to service extends beyond their respective medical careers. They are actively involved in marriage counselling and personal mentorship, particularly supporting younger couples as they navigate the responsibilities and challenges of family life.

Their commitment to the spiritual wellbeing and personal development of others reflects a shared passion for strengthening individuals, families and communities.

Retirement and Continued Service

Professor Malu officially retired from the University of Jos in May 2020, having attained the institution’s mandatory retirement age.

However, retirement has not brought an end to his commitment to professional service and mentorship.

He remains actively involved in postgraduate medical education, supervising and mentoring younger doctors and contributing to the continuous development of medical specialists in Nigeria.

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, where he continues to contribute his wealth of experience to the governance and development of the institution.

His continued involvement in medical education, institutional leadership and mentorship demonstrates that service to humanity does not necessarily end with formal retirement.

Beyond Titles and Achievements

The life and career of Professor Abraham Orkurga Malu (OON) offer an inspiring example of what dedication, discipline, professional excellence and purposeful leadership can accomplish.

From his humble beginnings in Audu Village, Tombo Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, to becoming a distinguished professor of medicine, internationally trained gastroenterologist, university administrator, healthcare institution builder and national advocate for improved hepatitis management, his journey is one of remarkable achievement.

Yet, beyond his academic qualifications, professional titles, publications and national honour, perhaps his greatest contribution is the legacy of people he has trained, institutions he has helped build and lives he has touched.

His belief in preparing others to take over represents a powerful model of sustainable leadership and mentorship.

Professor Malu’s story is a reminder that true greatness is not simply about how far one rises, but how many others are empowered to rise through one’s influence.
