The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the sum of ₦34.398 billion for the construction of a new airstrip in Gboko, Benue State, in a move aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and supporting economic development in the region.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council. According to the minister, the contract for the construction of the airstrip has been awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited.
A Strategic Infrastructure Project
Speaking on the significance of the project, Keyamo explained that the Gboko airstrip is expected to serve multiple strategic purposes beyond providing aviation services.
According to him, the facility will function as a vital hub for agricultural activities in Benue State, a region widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s major food-producing areas. Improved air access is expected to enhance the movement of agricultural inputs, facilitate the transportation of high-value and perishable farm produce, and create opportunities for greater investment in agribusiness.
The minister also noted that the airstrip will strengthen security operations by improving the ability of security agencies to deploy personnel and resources more efficiently when required. Faster aerial access could play an important role in responding to security challenges within Benue State and surrounding areas.
Supporting Humanitarian and Emergency Response
Beyond agriculture and security, the planned airstrip is expected to enhance humanitarian response efforts across the region.
Keyamo stated that the facility will support humanitarian interventions by providing easier access for relief agencies during emergencies. The airstrip is also designed to facilitate emergency medical services, enabling quicker transportation of critically ill or injured patients, medical personnel, and essential medical supplies.
The improved accessibility could prove particularly valuable during natural disasters, public health emergencies, or other situations requiring rapid intervention.
Boost for Benue State
The project is expected to contribute to the broader development of Benue State by improving connectivity and expanding infrastructure that supports economic growth.
As one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural states, Benue has long been recognized for its production of crops such as yams, soybeans, rice, maize, cassava, and various fruits. Enhanced aviation infrastructure could help unlock new opportunities for commerce, investment, logistics, and regional trade.
The construction phase is also expected to generate employment opportunities while stimulating business activities for contractors, suppliers, and local communities.
Contract Awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited
The Federal Government confirmed that the construction contract has been awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited, which will be responsible for delivering the project in line with the approved specifications.
The approval marks another investment in Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure as the government seeks to improve connectivity while supporting economic, security, and emergency response objectives across different parts of the country.

Looking Ahead
With the Federal Executive Council’s approval now secured, attention will shift to the commencement and execution of the project. Once completed, the Gboko airstrip is expected to become an important aviation facility serving Benue State and neighbouring communities by enhancing agricultural logistics, strengthening security operations, and improving the delivery of humanitarian and emergency medical services.
