There shall be a slight, marginal increase in salary come October 2026 for federal workers
on CONPSS (Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure) as well as those on CONRAISS (Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure), should the government implements what it said on Friday 24 April 2026 in Abuja through the Head of Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.
Didi stated that the Federal Executive Council has approved certain allowances.
A large percentage of the allowances she mentioned are mostly for the political class and directors but some cut across all staff from Grade Levels 1 to 17.
She was not explicitly specific on all fronts but from the much she revealed it appeared some crumbs of the allowances will cut across all workers in the selected circles, CONPSS and CONRAISS
See how it may work:
The Head of Service mentioned:
✔ Duty Tour Allowance (DTA)
✔ Estacode
✔ Book allowance
✔ Other “peculiar allowances” (wide category)
It is the fourth one: Other “peculiar allowances” that may apply to all.
Well, if they want they can still adjust the Other “peculiar allowances” list and someone may be put out of the box. Although it shouldn’t be so because their primary aim is to increase the renumeration of workers as the economy is not smiling.
She made it clear that:
“Almost all allowances in the Public Service Rules have been revised”. This is where it becomes certain that the salary increase is likely though slightly.
Since “Almost all allowances” (and some are inbuilt in the monthly salary) have been revised, it means the monthly salary will pop up a bit.
But fear government people and their language. Note that she said almost all not all and instead of saying the allowances have been increased she said they have been revised. Although it is obvious she meant an upward revision but even if there occur a downward one you can’t hold her because revision is revision. it’s good to know how to speak cleverly.
Well, that apart, the move is expected to increase the take-home pay of civil servants and boost the morale of the government’s workforce.
Nigeria’s latest reforms followed an increase in calls from labour unions for improved welfare of civil servants as the cost of living continues to soar, putting more pressure on workers.

In the Nigerian Public Service, allowances are provided under the Public Service Rules (PSR) and related circulars to support workers beyond their basic salary. They are not always listed in one single section but are recognized across government policies and salary structures (like CONPSS).
Here are the major allowances in the Nigerian Public Service:

- Housing Allowance
- Transport Allowance
- Meal Subsidy

- Uniform Allowance (for staff that require uniforms)

Important
- Not all civil servants receive all allowances—eligibility depends on grade level, job role, and posting.
- Many allowances are structured under CONPSS (Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure).
- The Federal Government periodically reviews and increases these allowances.
Example: Allowances applicable to GL 08 (Step 1–15), CONPSS
Officers on Grade Level 08 CONPSS, like other public servants, receive allowances applicable to their level and duties.
✅ Core Monthly Allowances (Most Common)
These are the standard ones that form part of your regular take-home:
- Housing Allowance

- Meal Subsidy
- Utility Allowance
👉 These are usually calculated as percentages of your basic salary and paid monthly.

⚙️ Conditional / Duty-Based Allowances
You only get these if your job requires them:

💡 Insight

- Meal Subsidy
- Utility
👉 These core allowances can make up 40%–60% extra on top of basic salary, depending on government adjustments.
