President Tinubu intervenes in Rivers State crisis as Wike /Fubara conflict heightens

President Bola Tinubu recently intervened in the political crisis within Rivers State, where conflicts had escalated between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The tension led to threats of impeachment against Governor Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly and a volatile atmosphere within the state’s political landscape.

In an effort to restore stability, President Tinubu facilitated a meeting with key stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and other national security officials. This intervention led to an eight-point resolution aimed at de-escalating the situation. Key actions included the immediate withdrawal of court cases linked to the crisis, the reinstatement of assembly members’ salaries and benefits, and the re-submission of the state’s budget through a fully recognized assembly. The agreement also nullified any attempts to dissolve local government councils, emphasizing the need for non-interference from the executive branch in legislative matters.
