William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto (born 21 December 1966) is a Kenyan politician serving as the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya. He assumed office on 13 September 2022 after winning the August 2022 presidential election. Prior to his presidency, Ruto was the first elected Deputy President of Kenya, serving from 2013 to 2022, and held several ministerial positions in earlier governments.

Early Life and Education

William Ruto was born in Sambut village, Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County, to Daniel and Sarah Cheruiyot, in a modest rural family. He has frequently spoken about growing up in challenging economic circumstances, selling peanuts and poultry on the roadside to earn income during his youth.

His educational journey included primary and secondary schooling in local institutions before moving on to the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and Zoology in 1990. He later continued his studies at the same institution, acquiring a Master of Science (MSc) in Plant Ecology in 2011 and a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology in 2018.

Political Career

Ruto entered national politics in the early 1990s and was first elected as Member of Parliament for Eldoret North in 1997. His political journey spans several parties and roles: he served as Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Agriculture, and Minister for Higher Education under various administrations prior to becoming Deputy President.

In 2013, Ruto was elected Deputy President alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta on the Jubilee ticket and was re-elected in 2017. After a significant political realignment, he ran for president in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as part of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, narrowly defeating his chief rival, Raila Odinga, with approximately 50.49 % of the vote.
