A HIDDEN BILLIONAIRE YOU NEVER KNEW WELL: At Gowon’s Autobiography Event Danjuma Donates N3bn, Dangote N500m

Nigeria witnessed a remarkable display of generosity, influence, and historical reflection as retired military leaders, business moguls, and political dignitaries gathered in Abuja for the public presentation of former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance.

What stunned many observers, however, was not only the significance of the book launch itself, but the enormous financial contributions made during the event — especially the massive N3 billion donation from former Minister of Defence, retired General Theophilus Danjuma.

The donation instantly became one of the most talked-about highlights of the ceremony, further reinforcing Danjuma’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s quiet but extraordinarily wealthy power brokers.

Danjuma’s N3 Billion Donation Steals the Spotlight

Retired General Theophilus Danjuma, who served as the Chief Presenter at the event, pledged a staggering N3 billion in support of the autobiography launch.

Although Danjuma was not physically present, he was represented by former Chief of Defence Staff, retired General Martin Luther Agwai.

Beyond the monetary donation, Danjuma also instructed that 12 copies of Gowon’s autobiography be purchased and distributed to libraries in each of the 20 universities that had awarded honorary doctorate degrees to Gowon over the years.

The gesture reflected not only financial support, but also an effort to preserve and circulate historical documentation about Nigeria’s political and military evolution.

For many Nigerians, the donation once again highlighted Danjuma’s enormous financial capacity — wealth that has often remained outside the spotlight despite his long-standing influence in politics, the military, and business.

Danjuma Describes Gowon as Nigeria’s Foremost Living Statesman

In a tribute delivered on his behalf, Danjuma praised Gowon’s leadership during one of the most difficult periods in Nigeria’s history.

He described the former Head of State as:

  • Nigeria’s foremost living statesman
  • An internationally respected leader
  • A wartime commander whose leadership prevented the breakup of Nigeria

According to Danjuma, Gowon’s famous post-civil war declaration of “no victor, no vanquished” laid the foundation for reconciliation, reconstruction, and national healing after the Nigerian Civil War.

He also revealed that his relationship with Gowon spans more than seven decades, dating back to their childhood days in Wusasa, Zaria.

Danjuma described the autobiography as a “treasure trove of history” that would serve as a valuable gift to future generations.

Dangote Contributes N500 Million

Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, also made a major contribution at the event.

Represented by his Senior Adviser, Mansur Ahmed, Dangote donated N500 million through the purchase of 25 copies of the autobiography.

Ahmed explained that Dangote was only a 10-year-old primary school student when Gowon was leading Nigeria during its turbulent years.

He credited Gowon’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity as one of the reasons the country remained stable enough for entrepreneurs like Dangote to thrive and build globally recognized businesses.

The statement connected Nigeria’s political stability after the civil war to the rise of modern Nigerian industrial giants.

Nigeria’s Elite Gather in Abuja

The presentation ceremony attracted an impressive gathering of political leaders, diplomats, military officers, and corporate executives.

Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the event on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

Also present were members of the diplomatic corps, top government officials, senior military officers, and influential business leaders.

The autobiography itself, titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, contains 20 chapters detailing Gowon’s experiences in leadership, military service, and nation-building.

The event served not only as a literary presentation but also as a gathering of some of Nigeria’s most influential figures across politics, business, religion, and the military.

BUA Chairman and Other Dignitaries Also Support the Launch

Several other prominent Nigerians also made substantial purchases of the autobiography during the ceremony.

Among them was Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group, who reportedly procured copies worth N25 million.

The strong financial backing from business leaders reflected the deep respect many influential Nigerians continue to hold for Gowon decades after his tenure as Head of State.

Bishop Kukah Reviews the Book

The autobiography was reviewed by Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, widely known for his commentary on governance, national unity, and social development.

Kukah reportedly highlighted the historical importance of the memoir and its relevance to understanding Nigeria’s political journey.

As one of the country’s most respected clerics and public intellectuals, his participation added further weight to the event.

Why Danjuma’s Wealth Continues to Fascinate Nigerians

While Dangote’s status as Africa’s richest man is globally recognized, General Theophilus Danjuma has long maintained a quieter public image despite being widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s wealthiest and most influential individuals.

Over the years, Danjuma built vast business interests spanning oil, shipping, and investments through companies such as South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO).

Unlike many billionaires who constantly appear in public discussions, Danjuma has largely remained reserved, making rare but powerful appearances at national events.

His N3 billion donation at Gowon’s autobiography launch reminded many Nigerians that some of the country’s wealthiest figures operate far from media attention while still wielding enormous economic and political influence.

A Ceremony That Became More Than a Book Launch

What began as the unveiling of a former Head of State’s autobiography evolved into a major national moment that brought together history, politics, wealth, and legacy.

The massive donations from Danjuma and Dangote dominated headlines, but the deeper significance of the event lay in its reflection on Nigeria’s past and the enduring influence of leaders who shaped the country during critical moments in its history.
