Benue State police, on an operation to eliminate a newly formed local militia in Agwabi in Tombo, Buruku LGA, encountered fierce resistance but ultimately overpowered the outlaws with superior firepower. 

“The police unit commander, however, lost his life in the process. The outlaws suffered heavier casualties,” a source said. 

This report details a major security operation conducted by the Benue State Police Command on March 19, 2025, under the directive of Commissioner of Police (CP) Steve H. Yabanet, FCID, psc (+). Below are details of the key events:

1. Commissioner’s Directive:
   • On June 3, 2025, CP Yabanet ordered Tactical Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to intensify crackdowns on criminals in Benue State due to intelligence reports of criminal gang regroupings.
2. Operation Zenda’s Raid:
   • In line with this directive, the Operation Zenda Joint Taskforce conducted raids across the state.
   • On March 19, 2025, at approximately 0200hrs, officers heading to a criminal hideout at Agwabi, Tombo, Buruku LGA were ambushed by bandits.
   • A fierce gun battle ensued, with the police deploying superior firepower to repel the attack.
3. Outcome of the Gun Battle:
   • Twelve (12) bandits were neutralized, while others fled.
   • Some bandits sustained injuries, were taken to the hospital, but were later confirmed dead.
   • Recovered items:
     • Three (3) AK-47 rifles
     • Six rounds of live ammunition
     • Camouflage uniforms
     • Assorted charms
4. Police Casualty:
   • Inspector Terfa Anyiatse sustained a gunshot wound and was confirmed dead at the hospital.
   • His remains have been deposited in the morgue.
   • The Commissioner of Police extended condolences to his family and praised the bravery of all officers involved.

1. Additional Operations in Daudu & Makurdi:
   • Further security operations led to:
     • Recovery of seven (7) locally made pistols.
     • Arrest of five (5) suspected robbers.
     • Arrest of thirty-two (32) suspected cultists.
   • Investigations are currently ongoing.
