Ethiopia Regions

Ethiopia is a federal country divided into regional states (“kililoch”) and chartered cities. It has 12 regions and 2 chartered cities.


🇪🇹 Regional States of Ethiopia

1. Tigray Region

  • Capital: Mekelle
  • Located in northern Ethiopia
  • Known for ancient sites like Axum

2. Afar Region

  • Capital: Semera
  • Very hot, desert climate
  • Home to the Danakil Depression

3. Amhara Region

  • Capital: Bahir Dar
  • Rich historical heritage (Lalibela, Gondar)

4. Oromia Region

  • Capital: Addis Ababa (finfinne, special arrangement)
  • Largest region by population and area

5. Somali Region

  • Capital: Jijiga
  • Predominantly Somali-speaking population

6. Benishangul-Gumuz Region

  • Capital: Assosa
  • Location of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

7. Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (historically large, now reorganized)

  • Former large multi-ethnic region
  • Has been split into several newer regions (see below)

8. Sidama Region

  • Capital: Hawassa
  • Famous for coffee production

9. South West Ethiopia Peoples’ Region

  • Capital: Bonga
  • Rich forests and biodiversity

10. Southern Ethiopia Region

  • Newly formed region (2023)
  • Includes several former SNNPR zones

11. Central Ethiopia Region

  • Formed in 2023
  • Includes Gurage and surrounding areas

12. Harari Region

  • Capital: Harar
  • Smallest region
  • Historic walled city
