5. Somali Region

- Predominantly Somali-speaking population
6. Benishangul-Gumuz Region
- Capital: Assosa
- Location of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
7. Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (historically large, now reorganized)
- Former large multi-ethnic region
- Has been split into several newer regions (see below)
8. Sidama Region
- Capital: Hawassa
- Famous for coffee production
9. South West Ethiopia Peoples’ Region
- Capital: Bonga
- Rich forests and biodiversity
10. Southern Ethiopia Region
- Newly formed region (2023)
- Includes several former SNNPR zones
11. Central Ethiopia Region
- Formed in 2023
- Includes Gurage and surrounding areas
12. Harari Region
- Capital: Harar
- Smallest region
- Historic walled city
