Federal Capital Territory
Nigeria has 109 Senatorial Districts, 3 in each of the 36 states and 1 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Every senatorial district sends a Senator to the House of Senate, National Assembly, Abuja, so the total number of Nigerian Senators is 109.
The Senatorial Districts are provided for by the constitution of Nigeria. Chapter 5, Part 1, Section 71 of the constitution talks about Senatorial Districts. INEC got empowered to create the senatorial districts. Subject to the provisions of section 72 of the Constitution, the Independent National Electoral Commission shall divide each State of the Federation into three Senatorial districts for purposes of elections to the Senate.
The formation of the Senate is based on the three Senatorial Districts per State and one for the Federal Capital Territory. The 109 member Senate is presided over by the President of the Senate and assisted by the Deputy President of the Senate, all are chosen among the Senators. They are then assisted by eight Principal Officers and several Committee Chairmen and Vice Chairmen.
The 8 Principal Officers include Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Chief Whip, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip.
As the highest lawmaking institution in Nigeria, the Senate is constitutionally vested with the power of making laws for the good governance of the country. It is empowered to represent the interest, yearnings, aspirations and wellbeing of the citizenry. It has the power of scrutinizing public institutions and officials to ensure accountability.
The Senate also intervenes in matters of urgent national issues and matters of national interest like insecurity, epidemic, drought, poverty, illiteracy, flood and others.
