Municipalities Ranked by Population (Cochabamba)
The population ranking of municipalities in the Department of Cochabamba shows a highly concentrated demographic pattern, where a small number of municipalities account for a large share of the total population, while most municipalities are relatively small.
Highly Concentrated at the Top
- Cochabamba municipality is by far the most populated, with 665,505 inhabitants, representing roughly one-third of the department’s total population on its own.
- The next two municipalities, Sacaba (219,092) and Quillacollo (166,741), are also part of the metropolitan area.
- Together, the top three municipalities concentrate over 50% of the department’s population, highlighting strong urban centralization.
Mid-Sized Municipalities
- Municipalities such as Villa Tunari, Colcapirhua, Puerto Villarroel, Tiquipaya, Vinto, and Sipe Sipe form a middle tier, with populations ranging from about 55,000 to 95,000.
- These municipalities often act as regional service centers or are linked to industrial, agricultural, or transport corridors, especially in the tropics and peri-urban zones.
Small and Very Small Municipalities
- The majority of municipalities—more than half—have fewer than 20,000 inhabitants.
- Many highland and rural municipalities such as Arque, Vacas, Anzaldo, Vila Vila, Sacabamba, and Sicaya have very small and dispersed populations.
- Tacachi, with just 1,287 inhabitants, is the least populated municipality in the department.
Indigenous Territory
- The TIOC Raqaypampa, with 8,056 inhabitants, falls within the lower half of the ranking, reflecting a small but culturally significant population with a distinct governance structure.

The population ranking underscores a strong urban–rural divide in Cochabamba. While a few metropolitan municipalities dominate demographically and economically, most municipalities are small, rural, and sparsely populated, which has important implications for resource allocation, service delivery, infrastructure planning, and regional development policies.
