In a unanimous decision, the 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen in Benue State (Sep 2024) have elected Hon. Orwough Maurice, the Chairman of Guma LGA as Benue State ALGON Chairman. Hon. James Melvin Ejeh (Agatu LGA Chairman) was made Deputy ALGON Chairman of the State as well as the & Zone C (Senatorial District) Chairman
Hon. Maurice Orwough, the newly sworn-in chairman of Guma Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State, has been chosen to lead the Benue State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). His selection came shortly after the inauguration of 23 local government chairmen at the Government House in Makurdi. Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State played a significant role in Orwough’s appointment, giving him strong backing within the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a reception held in his honor at the residence of Dr. Yanmar Ortese, Benue State’s Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Hon. Orwough expressed his gratitude to Governor Alia for his political mentorship. Although Orwough admitted that his emergence as ALGON chairman was unexpected, he had actively pursued the position.
Sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State revealed that Hon. Orwough’s election came soon after the swearing-in of 23 local government chairmen in a ceremony at Government House, Makurdi. Governor Alia’s backing was instrumental in Orwough’s appointment to this prominent role within ALGON, underscoring his political influence and support.
During a reception held at the residence of Dr. Yanmar Ortese, the State’s Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Hon. Orwough expressed deep gratitude for the governor’s support. He acknowledged Governor Alia’s pivotal role in his rise through the political ranks, attributing his current success to the mentorship and guidance provided by the governor.
While addressing the gathering, Orwough admitted that his appointment as the ALGON chairman came as a surprise, although he had pursued the position. His remarks highlighted his appreciation for the unexpected honor and the trust placed in him by both Governor Alia and his colleagues in the local government.
This new role places Hon. Maurice Orwough in a critical leadership position, where he will be responsible for representing the interests of all 23 local governments in Benue State at the national level within ALGON.
