Ogun Local Government Areas

Ogun State has 20 Local Governments. There are:

Abeokuta North Local Government has its headquarters at Akomoje in the Iberekodo area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Local Government first came into existence in 1981,as Abeokuta South Local Government the same year to make up the defunct Abeokuta Local Government. It however re-emerges again on 27th September, 1991 when the Federal Government created some new Local Government to make Local Government closer to the people at the grassroots.

Akomoje (Abeokuta) is the headquarters of this Local Government Area.

The Local Government has 16 wards: Ago-Odo/Ikereku/Ilawo, Ikija, Ago-oko, Elega Housing/Imala, Ibarekodo/Ilugun, Ita-ota/Gbagura, Ago-ika/Ijaiye Kukudi, Lafenwa/Afonta, Sabo/Ayetoro Garage, Oke-ago/Owu, Totoro/Oke Sokori, Ita-Oshin/Olomore, Olorunda/Ijale, Imala-Orile/Idi-Emi and Ibara-Orile.

PEOPLE
The Local Government Area is made up of people from Oke-Ona, Gbagura, Owu and Oke-Ogun. These people are peace-loving Yorubas, and the predominant language is Yoruba language with Egba dialect.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 200,000 (1994).

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly farmers, but in recent times the people have also involve themselves in quarry business, artisan works and handicrafts. Such as tie and dye making, Adire fabrics and pottery.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion such as worshiping of traditional deities e.g. Obatala, Sango, Egungun and Igunuko.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 77 public primary schools and 14 secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry.

TRADITIONAL RULERS
This Local Government Area can boast of a strong traditional heritage and a sound cultural background at the head of which are enlightened royal fathers,

This Local Government area is usually referred to as the Premier Local Government, owing to the historic eminence, as the traditional seat of the Local or native authority in Egba, since 1898 as well as the seat of the government of Ogun state that came to existence in 1976. The Local Government has 15 wards these are, Ake 1, Ake 2, Ake 3, Adatan/Lantoro, Emere, Ijemo, Itoko, Ijaiye/Idi-Aba, Erungbe/Ijoko/Ilogbo, Oke-Ejigbo, Oke-Ijeun, Ago Ijesha/Ijeun-Titun/Ago-Egun, Sodeke/Isale Ijeun 1, Igbore/Itori/Ago-Oba and Ibara.

Ake (Abeokuta) is the headquarters of this Local Government Area.

PEOPLE
Abeokuta South Local Government is mainly inhibited by the Egba Ake stock made up of Egba Eku, Egba Aarin and Egba Agbeyin.

OCCUPATION
The occupations of the indigenes of this area are pottery, tie and dye, amongst others.

RELIGION
Christianity, Islam and Traditional religion are the three religions of the people of the Local Government

EDUCATION
There are 45 primary Schools, 20 public secondary Schools, 7 private secondary schools and 1 Technical College.

TRADITIONAL RULERS
The Local Government has 2 main royal fathers, the Alake of Egbaland Oba (Dr.) Oyebade Lipede 1, and the Olubara of Ibara (Oba Jacob Olufemi Omolade Lafa 11.

This Local Government is the third largest in Ogun State. It covers an area of 1,460 Square kilometers, and it is a product of the merger of the former Ifo/Ota Local Government and some parts of the defunct YEWA SOUTH Local Government.

It has a population of 267,497 according to the 1996 projection, and 16 wards, namely, Ota 1, Ota 11, Ota 111, Ilogbo, Atan, Alapoti, Ado-Odo 1, Ado-Odo 11, Ere, Igbesa, Ketu Adie Owe, Agbara 1, Agbara 11 Iju, Sango and Ijoko.

This Local Government area has a number of manufacturing plants, industries and distilleries.

Ota is the headquarters of this Local Government Area.

PEOPLE
The Awori people are the predominant tribe in this Local Government Area. Also found in the area are Egba settlers at Itan, Ijoko and Sango Ota, while the Yewas and Eguns are in the Ado-Odo area.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 267,497 (1996).

OCCUPATION
This Local Government area is the most industrialized Local Government area in Ogun state. Its people are mercantile and industrially disposed in terms of occupation.

This Local Government area came into existence in May 22, 1981. It has a land area of about 631.5 square kilometers and is bounded by Yewa South in the west, Ifo Local Government in the South, Abeokuta North and Obafemi Owode in the north and east respectively.

Itori is the headquarters of this Local Government Area.
The Local Government is divided into 10 wards, namely Itori, Owowo, Mosan, Abalabi, Wasimi, Papalanto, Arigbajo, Obada, Asa Yobo and Elere Owus.

PEOPLE
The indigenous dwellers of this Local Government area are mainly the Egbas, particularly the Egba Owus.

OCCUPATION
Farming is the primary occupation of the indigenes of this area, trading activities is also common among the people, since it is basically a rural settlement.

POPULATION
Going by the 1991 population census, 147,000 is the population of this Local Government area.

RELIGION
Christianity, Islam and Traditional religion are the three religions of the people of the Local Government

EDUCATION
There are 53 primary Schools in this Local Government Area.

Ifo Local Government Area has a land area of 82,000 sq.km. and shares boundaries with Yewa South Local Government in the west, Ewekoro Local Government in the north, Obafemi-Owode Local Government in the east and Ado-Odo/Ota in the south. Ifo is the headquarters of this Local Government Area.

The Local Government has 11 wards namely: Ifo I, Ifo II, Ifo III, Agbado central, Akute –Ajuwon, Isheri, Oke-Aro-Ibaragun, Ososun, Sunren, Coker, and Ibogun.

PEOPLE
The Local Government Area is predominantly made up of Egbas, (Egba-Alake, Egba-Owu, Egba Oke-Ona and Egba-Gbagura. The Aworis and other sub-ethnic groups also co-exist there.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 186,000 according to 1991 population census.

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly farmers and traders.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 63 public primary schools & 11 secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry.

TRADITIONAL RULERS
There are two traditional rulers in this Local Government Area, The Olofin of Isheri (Oba Ganiyu Eniadenwa Obatula, Onigbakule II) and the Olu of Ifo (Oba Gabriel Sowunmilola Oluomo, Ajagungbade I).

This Local Government Area was created in September 1991, from the defunct Remo Local Government It is a semi-urban settlement, comprising of 5 major towns, namely Iperu, Ilisan, Ogere, Irolu and Ikenne the headquarters. It has a land area of about 137.13 sq.km. and bounded on the west by Obafemi-Owode Local Government, on the south by Sagamu Local Government, on the east and north by Odogbolu Local Government
Ikenne is the headquarters of this Local Government Area

PEOPLE
The Remo people are predominant in this area.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 72,980, according to 1991 National population census.

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly farmers and traders, due to the favorable rainforest weather in this area.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 34 primary & secondary schools. There are also two tertiary institutions that are privately owned, Babcock University at Ilisan and Ogun state-owned Institute of Social development at Shasha.

This Local Government Area derived its name from the fact that it lies to the east of Ijebu-Ode, the center-point of Ijebu-Land. It has its headquarters at Ogere, a distance of about 22km from Ijebu-ode; it is bounded in the north by Ijebu north Local Government, in the east by Odigbo Local Government of Ondo state, in the North West and west by Ijebu-Ode and Odogbolu Local Governments.

Ijebu-east Local Government serves as an important link and focal point between Ogun and other eastern states of Nigeria, particular from Ondo to Edo states.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 76,182 according to 1991 census.

OCCUPATION
The economic mainstay of the people includes farming, hunting, fishing, craftwork and sculpturing.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 53 public primary schools & 10 secondary schools.

This Local Government was established in 1979,and has its headquarters at Ijebu-Igbo. It occupies an area of about 1,250 sq.km.,and is bounded by Oluyole Local Government of Oyo state in the north, in the west by Ijebu-east Local Government, in the south by Ijebu north –east, Odogbolu and Ijebu-ode Local Government, and in the east by Ikenne Local Government

The Local Government has 11 political wards, namely Atikori, Oke-Agbo, Ojowo/Japara, Oke-Sopen, Ome, Oru-awa-ilaporu, Osun and Ago-Iwoye urban I, Ago-Iwoye urban II, Ako-Onigbagbo Gelete, and Mamu/Ehin-Etiri.

PEOPLE
This Local Government Area is peopled by the Ijebus, who live in the following major towns: Ijebu-Igbo, Ago-Iwoye, Oru, Awa, Ilaporu, etc.

POPULATION
According to the 1991 population census, the projected population of this Local Government Area is about 142,429

OCCUPATION
Agriculture is the economic mainstay of the people of this Area.

TRADITIONAL RULERS

The Local Government came into being on 13th December 1996,having been carved out of Ijebu-ode Local Government it is bounded by Ijebu East Local Government in the East,Ijebu North Local Government in the north,Ijebu-ode Local Government in the south and Odogbolu Local Government in the west.
Its headquarters is in Atan, and it has 10 political wards: Ward 1 to ward 10.

PEOPLE
The people of the area belong to the Yoruba ethnic group. They speak the Yoruba language, with Ijebu as the main dialect

The people are predominantly Farmers,

Christianity and Islam have large fellowship in the Local Government area. There are also traditional worshipers.

This Local Government Area, came into being on March 11,1938.it has its Local Government headquarters at Ijebu-ode, and bounded in the north, by Ijebu-North and Ijebu -East Local Government, in the east by Ijebu-East Local Government, and in the south by Lagos state, Odogbolu Local Government is to the western side.

It has eleven electoral wards, namely, Isoku-Ososa ward, Odo-Esa ward, Itantebo/Ita-Ogbin, Ijada/Imepe 1, Ijada/Imepe 11, Porogun 1, Porogun 11, Ijasi-Idepo, Odo-Egbo/Oliworo, Isiwo, and Itamapako.

PEOPLE
The ethnic group is Yoruba, and Ijebu is the dialect of the people in this Local Government Area.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 297,582 (1991 population census.)

OCCUPATION
The people are farmers, but in recent times the people have also involve themselves in trading into manufacturing.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

Imeko/Afon Local Government was carved out of the old Egbado (Yewa) North Local Government in December 1996. It is bounded in the north by Oyo state, in the east by Abeokuta North Local Government, in the south by Yewa North Local Government while it shares a common international border with the republic of Benin in the west. It has a land area of about 1,711.43 sq.km. with 10 political wards.

PEOPLE
The indigenes of Imeko/Afon Local Government are predominantly Yorubas of Ketu origin with a sizeable number of Ohori and Egun speaking people.

POPULATION
According to the 1991 population census, the projected population of this Local Government Area is about 118,339.

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly Farmers.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area,while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 43 public primary schools & 6 secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry.

Ipokia Local Government came into being along side other created Local Government on 13th December, 1996 and was carved out of the old YEWA SOUTH Local Government it shares boundaries withYewa North Local Government in the north, Lagos state in the south, Republic of Benin in the west, and both Yewa South and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government in the east.
It is significant to note that this Local Government is blessed with a very rich island known as TONGEJI ISLAND.

This Local Government Area has 12 wards, Ipokia ward I, Ipokia ward II, Maun ward I, Maun ward II, Idiroko ward, Ajegunle, Ago Sasa, Tube, Ijofin, Agada, Ihunbo/Ilase, and Ifoyintedo. Its headquarters is in Ipokia.

PEOPLE
The inhabitants of this Local Government area are predominantly Anagos, Eyos and Eguns.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 300,000 (1991 census figures).

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly Farmers.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 72 public primary schools & 10 secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry, with about 27 private nursery & primary schools and 2 private secondary schools.

This Local Government was one of the Local Governments. That came into existence through Edict no.9 of 1976. Obafemi-Owode is made up of about 1,204 towns and villages, with a landmass of 104,787.07 hectares of agricultural land.

It is bounded in the north by Odeda Local Government and Oyo state, in the east by Sagamu and Ikenne Local Government, and in the south by Ifo Local Government

The Local Government Area has 12 political wards. They are Mokoloki, Oba, Ofada, Egbeda, Owode, Kajola, Ajura, Moloko, Asipa, Onidundu, Obafemi, Ajebo, Alapako-Oni. Its headquarters is in Owode-Egba

PEOPLE
The Local Government Area is made up of people from Adigbe, Oba, Iro, Obafemi etc., and the predominant language is Yoruba language with Egba dialect.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 230,000.

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly Farmers, but in recent times the people have also involve themselves in quarry business, artisan works & handicrafts, tie & dye making, Adire fabrics and pottery.

There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion such as worshiping of traditional gods and goddesses.

The Local Government has over 100 public primary and secondary schools.

TRADITIONAL RULERS

The traditional institution of the people in this Local Government is predominantly governed by BAALES, with the exception of a very early settlement called Iro, which is governed by an Oba, the Oniro of Iro, (Oba Sanusi Oyere Ogunrinde, Eribi IV)

This Local Government Area has its headquarters at Odeda, which is about 10 km from Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. It has a landmass of 1,263.25 sq. km, and shares boundaries with Ibarapa and Iddo Local Government of Oyo state in the north and east, while in the south and west by Abeokuta South and Obafemi/Owode Local Government respectively.

Odeda Local Government Area has 11 wards, namely Odeda, Balogun Itesi, Olodo, Alagbagba, Ilugun, Osiele, Obantoko, Alabata, Obete and Opeji.

PEOPLE
The people are predominantly Egbas, and they speak Egba dialect.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 99,115, according to 1991 census.

OCCUPATION
The people are mainly agrarian, with few who are involved in quarry business, trading, and craft works.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 98 public primary schools & 10 secondary schools.
Among the educational institutions in the area are the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (U.N.A.A.B), Federal College of Education, Osiele and the University of Ado-Ekiti, Abeokuta Centre.

TRADITIONAL RULERS
The Agura of Gbagura is the only state recognized Oba in the Local Government Area. He is therefore regarded as the president of the Traditional council in the Local Government Area. There are Baales in the villages and hamlets in the area.

This Local Government Area is strategically located on a large expense of land of about 640sq.km and was created on the 21st September 1991. It shares boundaries on its northern fringes with Ijebu-North Local Government, in the east with Ijebu-Ode Local Government, in the west with Ikenne Local Government and in the south with Epe Local Government in Lagos State.
This Local Government Area has about 150 towns and villages under its jurisdiction. It has 15 wards and its headquarters is in Odogbolu.

PEOPLE
Inhabitants of Odogbolu Local Government are Yoruba of Ijebu extraction, like any other Nigerian society there are growing number of people from other ethnic groups in the country, such as the Igbos, Isokos, Urhobos, Hausa, etc.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 200,000 (1991 census).

OCCUPATION
The people in this area are mainly agrarian, engaged in farming, hunting, fishing, lumbering and handicraft.

RELIGION
Christianity and Islam are the two main religions of the people, however there still remain sizeable number of committed traditional worshippers.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has public primary schools & secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry.

TRADITIONAL RULERS

This Local Government Area was one of the Local Government created on May 15,1989. It covers an area of about 860.32 sq. km, and is bounded in the west by Ijebu East Local Government, in the north and the east by Ondo state and in the south by Lagos State and the Atlantic Ocean.

This Local Government Area has its headquarters at Abigi and has 10 wards, namely Iwopin, Oni/Alo, Ibiade, Lukogbe/Ilusin, Abigi, Efire, Ayede/Lomiro, Ayila/Itebu, Makun/Irokun, and Ode-Omi.

PEOPLE
These people are peace-loving Yorubas, and the predominant language is Yoruba language with Ijebu, Ikale and Ilaje dialect.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 112,802 (1990).

OCCUPATION
The major occupation of the people in this is farming, fishing and lumbering.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 60 public primary schools & 12 secondary schools. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry, with 3 private nursery/primary school, and 2 private secondary schools.

TRADITIONAL RULERS
This Local Government Area can boast of a strong traditional heritage and a sound cultural background at the head of which are enlightened royal fathers. There are 4 part two Obas, 5 part three Obas and 7 Baales in this Local Government Area.

Remo North Local Government was carved out of Ikenne Local government on October 1, 1996. It occupies about 195 sq.km., and is bounded by Ijebu North, Ikenne, Obafemi/Owode Local Government and Oyo State to the east, south, west and north respectively.

It has 10 electoral wards and its headquarters is in Isara. The wards are Isara ward I, Isara ward II, Isara ward III, Isara ward IV, Ilara, Akaka, Ipara, Orile-Oko, Ode-Remo ward I, and Ode-Remo ward II.

PEOPLE
This Local Government is peopled by the Remos, and because of its semi-urban nature, it has continued to attract indigenes and non-indigenes for industrial growth.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is over 112,000 (1991 census)

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly Farmers and industrialists.

RELIGION
There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

This Local Government Area was carved out of old Remo Local Government, and came into being on 23rd September 1991. It has a land area of about 68.03 sq. km, its headquarters in Sagamu, and bounded by Odogbolu, Local Government, Lagos State, Ikenne Local Government and Obafemi Owode Local Government in the east, north and west respectively.

Sagamu Local Government has 15 wards, divided into Oko, Epe & Itunla I ward, Okop Epe & Itunla II, Aiyegbami/Ijoku, Sabo I, Sabo II, Itunsoku/Oyebajo, Ijagba, Latawa, Ode-Lemo, Ogijo/Ikosi, Surulere, Isote, Simawa, Agbowa and Ibido/Itun Alara.

PEOPLE
The Local Government Area is peopled by all tribes in Nigeria, though Remo dialect of Yoruba language is the main Local language.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 203,350 (1997 census figures).

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly farmers, this area produced the best farmer of the year 1993 at both the state and national levels.

This Local Government Area was formerly Egbado North Local Government. It has its headquarters at Ayetoro, and came into existence via Local Government edict no.9 of 1976.

This area has a land size of about 200,213.5 hectares, shares boundaries with Imeko/Afon Local Government in the north, in the south by Yewa South Local Government, in the west by the Republic of Benin and in the east by Abeokuta North and Ewekoro Local Government

There are 11 wards in this Local Government Area, namely Ayetoro ward I, Ayetoro ward II, Idofoi, Sunwa, Ijoun, Eggua, Ohunbe, Igbogila/Ibese, Joga-Orile/Ibooro and Imasai.

PEOPLE
The inhabitants are mainly Yoruba, speaking various dialects like Yewa, Ketu, etc.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 140,848 (1991 census).

There is freedom of worship for every one, however Christians and Muslims are found in the area, while some take to traditional religion.

EDUCATION
The Local Government has 97 public primary schools & 19 secondary schools and I Technical College. There are also an appreciative number of private investments in the education industry in this area .

This Local Government Area was formerly Egbado South Local Government. It has its headquarters at Ilaro, and it came into existence on 18th December 1997. It has a landmass of about 163,720 sq.km, and shares boundaries with Yewa North Local Government in the north, Ipokia Local Government in the south and in the west and east by Ifo and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government

This area has 10 wards, namely Ilaro I, Ilaro II, Ilaro III, Iwoye, Idogo, Owode I, Owode II, Ilobi/Erinja, Oke-Odan and Ajilete.

PEOPLE
The Local Government Area is made up of the Yoruba people of Yewa extraction, and the predominant language is Yoruba language with Yewa and Egun dialect.

POPULATION
The projected population of this Local Government Area is about 156,890 (1991 census)

OCCUPATION
The people are predominantly farmers and traders , while a few engage in craftsmanship.
