The Executive Chairman of Oju LGA , Hon. Ominyi Jackson has assured the good people of Oju LGA that peace will return to the warring communities of Ukpute in Oju LGA and Bonta in Konshisha LGA very soon. The council chairman gave this assurance yesterday, November the 1st, 2024 shortly after a meeting with the deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. Sam
Ode Mni, in Makurdi.
Hon. Ominyi has revealed that part of the resolutions of the meeting which was attended by stakeholders from both Oju and Konshisha LGAs was a ceasefire agreement between Ukpute and Bonta communities. Other resolutions reached in the meeting included;
- Alaide – Oju road to be reopened immediately.
- The National Boundary Commission will lead the Benue State Boundary Committee in the demarcation of the boundary corridor.
- Anyone that goes against the above will be an enemy of the State, and the State security agents will do the needful.
- If the above do not succeed, the disputed area would be declared a buffer zone by the state government.
The agreement was adopted by voice vote and noted by the deputy governor, Barr. Sam Ode Mni, with a clause that any party that breaches the agreement would be made to face the anger of the state.
The Chairman has expressed his sincere appreciation on behalf of the good people of Oju LGA to Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia and his Deputy, Barr. Sam Ode Mni for their commitment to the restoration of peace in the region. He has also applauded the member Representing Oju/Obi Federal constituency at the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. David Ogewu, for his efforts towards resolving the crisis. He has also appreciated the Traditional leaders, Hon. Ona Blessed Emmanuel, Prof. Otor Okwu, appointees of the Governor from Oju LGA as well as other illustrious sons and daughters of Igede land for their relentless efforts in the drive to restore lasting peace to the affected communities.
While hoping that the resolutions arrived at in the meeting yesterday will bolster peace in the region, the Executive Chairman has warned against the use of inflammatory statements and purveying of unverifiable claims on the crisis particularly on social media henceforth as culprits of such divisive acts would be penalized appropriately going forward.
Hon. Ominyi, has equally reiterated his commitment to ensuring that there is peace and development in Oju LGA during his time as the chairman of the Local Government Council even as he has implored all good spirited persons to continue to pray for the return of genuine peace in the land.
