Calvin Cloete, a 38-year-old South African man, was sentenced to two life terms and an additional 31 years in prison for the brutal rape and murder of his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend, Carmen Gouws. This ruling was handed down by the High Court of South Africa in Vredendal. Cloete attacked Gouws with an axe on October 7, 2023, after a violent history with her, which began when she was a young teenager.
In court, Cloete admitted to the charges but denied premeditation, though he confessed to having intended harm. The sentencing included life imprisonment for both rape and murder, and additional years for related charges, including attempted murder and kidnapping. He will be eligible for parole only after serving 25 years. The judge and prosecutors emphasized Cloete’s toxic, violent behavior and his belief that if he couldn’t have her, no one else could.
Advocates for the prosecution and public safety commended the investigative efforts that led to the conviction, underscoring the importance of addressing gender-based violence and bringing perpetrators to justice
