As courtly artefacts, the Benin Bronzes were used to decorate the palace of the Oba (King of the Benin Kingdom).
The Benin Bronzes are a collection of bronze statues, sculptures and plaques which were made to glorify the Oba and honour the Iyoba (Queen mother).
This warrior figure is one of the many Benin bronze artifacts. It depicts, in elaborate craftsmanship, a Benin warrior in full regalia wielding a spear, and carrying what seems to be some other weapon.
This artefact shows in details the uniform, weapons and probably charms the Benin warrior goes to war with.
It is said that Bronze warrior statues like this are made to represent warriors in the King’s ancestry.
