Talata Mafara is a Local Government Area (LGA) in Zamfara State, Nigeria, with its administrative headquarters in the town of Talata Mafara. The town is situated approximately 15 km from the Bakolori Dam on the Sokoto River and is positioned near a significant irrigation project. Talata Mafara covers a vast area of 1,430 square kilometers and had a population of 215,178 as per the 2006 census. The LGA is also notable for being the birthplace of Yahaya Abdulkarim, who served as the governor of Sokoto State between January 1992 and November 1993.

Geography

The LGA enjoys an average temperature of 34°C, and it is known for its proximity to the Sokoto River and dry desert-like areas. The average wind speed in the region is around 11 km/h.

Climate

Talata Mafara experiences two main seasons: the wet season, which is generally hot and cloudy, and the dry season, which is oppressively hot and partially cloudy. The average annual temperature ranges from 61°F to 103°F, with rare extremes outside of 56°F to 107°F. The hottest period runs from March to May, peaking in April with an average high of 102°F. The coolest period occurs from July to September, with January being the coldest month, averaging a low of 62°F and a high of 89°F.
