An Overview of other subsidiaries of Juhel
The growth and expansion of Juhel Nigeria Limited is further seen in the establishment of subsidiary companies outside the pharmaceutical industry. With the successful developmentof the pharmaceutical company, it served as a foundation upon which Dr. Eric Okoye stood to float other companies completely outside pharmaceuticals. The most conspicuous is his investments in the downstream oil sector.
Juhel Gas
With obvious appreciable returns on investment on downstream oil sector and the promise of alternative capital it presented, Dr. Eric Okoye ventured into marketing and distributorship of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) also known as cooking gas, in 1993.
The gas company goes by the name Juhel Gas. It had a distributing station at Industrial Layout Agu-Awka in the present Anambra State capital and was moved out in 2013 when the State Government indicated interest to transform the industrial layout into a residential area.
Before its economic activities was truncated, the Juhel LPG plant in Awka was amajor cooking gas distributor and was believed to be the a reliable source of cooking gasfor both retailers and end-users. The plant had in its employment more than fifteen workers which included the manager, the accountant, the supervisor two drivers, platform workersand the security guards. The products from the gas plant were distributed to major cities of Anambra state. The gas plant received an average of 15 trucks of 35,000 liters tank (20 metric tons) of cooking gas each, per annum.
This was against its immediate competitors which were reportedly averaging about four to five trucks of same content and weight, per annum (for the closest competitor WHIZ Gas).
Juhel Block Industry
Few years after the take-off of the Juhel Gas, the Juhel Block Industry was floated. The block industry was also located at the Industrial Layout Agu-Awka, though it has a branch in Enugu. The block industry recorded huge returns before it was also removed from its Agu-Awka location.
Juhel block industry maintains a workforce of fifteen to twenty. The number of employees always fluctuates because of the semi-skilled or unskilled requirements.
A part from the manager, accountant and security personnel, there is no job specification for the members of the production team. Even the truck drivers at times joined in production. The industry had about seven trucks used for supplies and purchase of production materials. The quantity of blocks and other concrete products from the industry varied.
Season affects sales and production. However, block and other concrete products output was not limited to individual buyers because the company also engaged in contract manufacturing for government, construction companies and other bodies.
Juhel Petroleum Marketing
Juhel delved into petroleum marketing in 1997.
This started with haulage and supplies of products with rented trucks. Gradually, the company started purchasing and acquiring its own trucks and the market continued to expand. With impressive returns and bright prospects in the oil industry, the company acquired its first service station at Ogui Junction Enugu. Due to the strategic location of the service station and the massive space it has, the management of Juhel Nigeria Limited deemed it rewarding to purchase the former Mobil Service Station in 2002.
The acquisition of this station marked the beginning of Juhel’s massive investment in the oil sector. Juhel built and acquired service stations across Enugu and further extended to Awka the present capitalof Anambra state. The first Juhel service station in Awka is located at Eze-Uzu Junction situated in- between the Enugu-Onitsha express way and the Enugu-Onitsha old road. The station was formerly commissioned and opened in 2010. It has four selling points for automobile fuel. Each point has two-in-one dispensing pump. It also has one selling point for kerosene and one for automobile diesel fuel. Another important department in this station is the lubrication workshop known as the Lub Bay. Here, a professional is employed for maintenance services of customers’ vehicles.
The strategic location of this station led to immediate and enormous returns toinvestment. The station records a receipt and sales of more than fifty trucks with 33,000 literstank of automobile fuel each, per annum. Furthermore, it records the receipt of about seventrucks with 33,000 liters tank of kerosene each, per annum. It also receives and sells morethan ten trucks with 33,000 liters of automobile diesel fuel each, per annum.
The station also has a groceries store where essential groceries and other automobile fluids are sold. The automobile fluids include engine oil of different brands, brake fluid of different brands, steering oil, gear oil and others.
