Ukum

Ukum is the second largest clan in Tiv nation. It’s second only to Ihiarev while Kunav comes third. The name also goes for the LGA where Ukum people dominate.

Ukum LGA is one of the 23 Local Government Areas in Benue State, Nigeria, located in the northeastern part of the state. Ukum is known for its rich agricultural lands and the vibrant activities of its residents. The area plays a significant role in the state’s agricultural output and has a deep-rooted cultural heritage tied to the Tiv people.

Location

Ukum LGA is situated in the northeastern corner of Benue State, bordered by other LGAs such as:

  • Katsina-Ala LGA to the south
  • Logo LGA to the west
  • Taraba State to the northeast

Ukum’s geographical location gives it strategic importance, particularly in trade and agricultural production, as it is close to the borders of Benue and Taraba states.

Zaki Biam

Ukum hosts several vibrant markets where local produce is sold. The Zaki-Biam Yam Market, one of the largest yam markets in West Africa, is located within Ukum LGA. This market attracts traders from different parts of Nigeria and neighboring countries, making Ukum a significant center for agricultural trade.

Insecurity

Like some other areas in Benue State, Ukum has experienced communal clashes and violence, often related to land disputes and farmer-herder conflicts.

Lately bandits from within the communities have unleashed disaster on the people: Killings, looting, arson and more. Full Fire and his group was one among several other bandit groups.
